orphans children whose parents died of aids. we try to
raise support for them for food, clothing and school.

Kitale
General Info:
Kitale is a service town, 330 km
northwest of Nairobi. A small agricultural town, Kitale
is a base for people heading to Mt Elgon, Saiwa Swamp
National Park and up to Turkana. The town dates back to
the 1920s and 30s when the fertile land surrounding
the town was heavily settled. Before that to the 19th
century when the settlement of Quitale was a
slave-trading center. Kitale is the seat of the District
headquarters of Trans-Nzoia , a wealthy agricultural
area and serves a catchments population of over
800,000.
It has a post office, banks and busy
market, as well as a little museum.. The Kitale Museum
has an ethnographic exhibition on the Turkana people. At
the back of the museum there is a small rain forest.
There are several hotels and restaurants in town, as
well as numerous shops where you can fill up your
supplies. The bus and matatu park is a chaotic mess of
vehicles and people shouting directions. Just walk
around and someone will ask you where you are heading.
You will then be taken to the right minibus.
The
town was founded in 1908 as a service centre, when
European Farmers started settling in the region. Its
importance as a growth pole increased with the
construction of the railway which reached the town in
1925. Kitales development is similar to other Rift
Valley towns, with township status given in 1930 and
Municipality status in
1968. |
